EGR & Cooling for the Ford Power Stroke
EGR coolers, EGR delete and upgrade kits, radiators, oil coolers, water pumps, and thermostats that fix the Power Stroke's known cooling weak points.
0 parts
Cooling is the Power Stroke's most consequential system, because on the 6.0 and 6.4 the cooling and EGR components fail as a chain rather than one at a time. A plugged oil cooler starves the EGR cooler, the EGR cooler ruptures, and the head gaskets pay for it — which is why owners fix this whole area at once.

EGR & Cooling for the Power Stroke: what to know before you buy
The diagnostic that matters on a 6.0 is the delta between engine oil temperature and engine coolant temperature under load: a healthy oil cooler keeps them close, and a widening gap means the cooler is plugging. Catching it there is what prevents the rest of the chain.
New coolers, thermostats, coolant filtration kits, and gaskets are Amazon Automotive parts; complete radiators, EGR coolers, and OEM assemblies for older trucks are frequently better sourced used or OEM on eBay Motors.
Fitment by engine
| Engine | What's different |
|---|---|
| 7.3L (1994.5–2003) | No EGR system on these trucks, which removes an entire failure category. Cooling work here is the conventional stuff: radiator, thermostat, water pump, hoses, and keeping the coolant chemistry correct. |
| 6.0L (2003–2007) | The engine oil cooler plugs with casting sand and coolant debris, which starves the EGR cooler and cooks it. Coolant filtration, a fresh oil cooler, and a properly-serviced cooling system are the standard defense — usually done alongside head studs if the heads are already off. |
| 6.4L (2008–2010) | Radiators and EGR coolers are both known weak points, and the truck's high heat load makes cooling-system condition a reliability issue rather than a maintenance footnote. |
| 6.7L (2011+) | EGR coolers and the secondary cooling circuit are the service items. Coolant condition and correct fill/bleed procedure matter more than most owners expect on this engine. |
Before you buy
- On a 6.0, compare oil temperature to coolant temperature under load before buying anything — that gap is the oil cooler's report card.
- Replace the oil cooler and EGR cooler as a set on a 6.0; doing one and leaving the other rarely ends well.
- Add coolant filtration if you're keeping a 6.0 long-term — it's the cheapest protection in this category.
- Use the correct coolant specification and follow the bleed procedure; trapped air causes symptoms that look like component failure.
- If the heads are coming off anyway, price head studs and gaskets in the same job.
