Air Intake for the Ford Power Stroke
Cold air intakes, intake elbows, intercooler pipes, and boost tubes that free up airflow and feed the Power Stroke turbo more cool, dense air.

Everything between the air filter and the intake manifold matters more on a diesel than most owners expect — not because a cold air intake makes horsepower on a stock truck, but because restriction and leaks show up as heat, and heat is what breaks Power Strokes.

Air Intake for the Power Stroke: what to know before you buy
Be honest about what each part does. An intake system buys airflow headroom and lower exhaust gas temperatures on a tuned or hard-worked truck; it does not add meaningful power to a stock one. The charge-air side — intercooler, boots, and clamps — is where real, measurable problems live, particularly the 6.0's boots blowing off under boost.
Filters, boots, clamps, and crankcase-ventilation/air-oil separators are stocked new on Amazon Automotive. Complete intake kits and used intercoolers are an eBay Motors market.
Fitment by engine
| Engine | What's different |
|---|---|
| 7.3L (1994.5–2003) | A simple airbox and intake tract. Intake work here is mostly about filtration quality and a clean, sealed path; the engine's airflow needs are modest by modern standards. |
| 6.0L (2003–2007) | The intercooler boots and clamps are a genuine weak point — they split or blow off under boost and instantly cost power and fuel economy. A boot-and-clamp kit is one of the highest-value parts in this category. The CCV system also pulls oil into the intake tract over time. |
| 6.4L (2008–2010) | Runs hot with a DPF in the system, so charge-air cooling condition matters. Check the intercooler and its plumbing before assuming a turbo or tuning problem. |
| 6.7L (2011+) | Modern airbox and charge-air system. Filter condition and a leak-free charge-air path are the practical concerns; aftermarket intakes here are mostly about airflow headroom on tuned trucks. |
Before you buy
- Pressure-test the charge-air system before buying intake parts — a blown boot mimics a failing turbo.
- Dry vs. oiled filter is a maintenance-style choice; over-oiling a filter is the classic way to foul a sensor.
- On a 6.0, replace boots and clamps as a kit rather than chasing one at a time.
- Consider an air-oil separator/CCV upgrade if your intake tract is coated in oil.
- Judge an intake by EGT headroom and filtration quality, not by advertised horsepower.
