Its reputation is ugly, but the truth is narrower: the block is strong, and nearly every notorious failure is a known weak point with a known part that fixes it. The Root Cause: Heat and Oil Flow

Before the parts list, the one idea that ties the 6.0 together: most 6.0 failures are heat failures, and heat failures start at the oil cooler. The factory oil cooler clogs, coolant stops moving the way it should, the EGR cooler cooks, temperatures climb, and the head gaskets finally give up against stock torque-to-yield head bolts. Fix the cooling and clamping first and the rest of the engine calms down.

1. Head Gaskets & Head Studs

The 6.0’s stock head bolts are torque-to-yield and stretch under boost and heat, letting the heads lift enough to push combustion into the cooling system. Symptoms: coolant loss, white exhaust, bubbling in the degas bottle, and overheating under load.

2. Oil Cooler & EGR Cooler

These two fail together because they share coolant flow — see the FAQ above for the full mechanism. A ruptured EGR cooler is very often a downstream symptom of a clogged oil cooler.

3. Injectors & FICM

The 6.0 fires its injectors with high-pressure oil, driven by the FICM (Fuel Injection Control Module). Both wear.

4. Standpipes & Dummy Plugs (2004.5+)

On 2004.5-and-later engines, the high-pressure oil rails are capped by standpipes and dummy plugs whose o-rings crack with age and heat, bleeding off the oil pressure that fires the injectors. The classic symptom is a truck that cranks fine but won’t start hot, or a long hot-restart.

5. Fuel Filtration, Filter Cap & Water Separation

6. Turbo & Crankcase Ventilation

The 6.0’s VGT turbo (with its EBP — exhaust back pressure — hardware) can stick with soot, and the factory crankcase ventilation dumps oil mist into the intake.

Yes. Why do the oil cooler and EGR cooler fail together on the 6.0?
They share coolant flow. The 6.0's oil cooler sits in the valley and clogs with casting sand and debris over time; once it clogs, coolant flow to the EGR cooler drops and the EGR cooler overheats and ruptures. That's why a ruptured EGR cooler is often really an oil-cooler problem, and why replacing both at once is standard practice. Rising oil temperatures that track coolant temperature are the classic early warning.
What are 6.0 standpipes and dummy plugs, and why do they fail?
On 2004.5-and-later 6.0L engines, the high-pressure oil that fires the injectors travels through oil rails capped by standpipes and dummy plugs. Should I delete the EGR on my 6.0, or replace it?
For an emissions-legal street truck, replace the EGR cooler with an upgraded unit and keep the system functional — deleting emissions hardware on a street-registered vehicle carries legal and warranty consequences. Deletes exist for off-road and competition use only. Either way, the oil cooler underneath must be addressed, because a clogged oil cooler is what kills the EGR cooler in the first place.
How do I know which 6.0 fuel filter and cap I need?
